Server monitoring with Icinga 2 – Part 1: the server (Ubuntu host)

Nagios has, for a long time, been the defacto standard tool for server monitoring. These day that’s surprising, as Nagios’ visible development has been quite slow over the past years and new solutions have popped up meanwhile. Not just self-hosted solutions, but cloud-based solutions with fancy metrics voodoo as well.

Still, though, switching monitoring solutions can be a pain and cloud-based solutions arguably cost more than a self-hosted solution. So, say you want to switch from Nagios or you want to start with server monitoring, there is a solution. Icinga2!

The price may vary based on where you are located; in the Eurozone the prices is in euros. VAT may be added depending on your situation.

Good to know: I went to the order process myself and you will get a phone call to verify your order. I was called within 10 minutes. They verify your street address, e-mail address, and ask you whether it’s a server for private or business purposes.

LeaseWeb is an Amsterdam-based hosting company that has been operating since 1997. They’re part of the bigger OCOM Group, which also owns evoSwitch and several other companies. Their office is real (I drive past it quite frequently) and they’re quite a sizable operation at that. The storage with these machines is on a SAN and is on a RAID10 array. Transfer was increased heavily lately, with the cheapest server going from 500GB to 4TB! This change is permanent and not limited to this promotion. If you get a server for a longer period you also get discount, which stacks up meaning you can get these servers even cheaper if you pay for a longer term. As always, we’re very interested to hear how you guys experience this offers, so feel free to comment!

HostUS has been around since 2012. They’re a registered company in the US and their WHOIS is public as well. While they initially started with just an Atlanta location, they later expanded to Dallas and Los Angeles, followed by Hong Kong right now. Contrary to the US, hardware in Hong Kong is rented and not owned by HostUS. Host nodes have dual Intel Xeon E5 CPUs and SSDs in hardware RAID10. These offers feature a panel called the ‘Breeze’ panel which appears to be custom to HostUS. More information about that here. If you give their Hong Kong location a shot, please let us know how it goes!
